Relationships. We all know people…we are all involved in relationships.
Relationships. We all know people…we are all involved in relationships. Maybe you have relationships all figured out, and know everything there is to possibly know about marriage, sex, parenting, dealing with conflict…actually…on second thought…maybe not. (If you do have all the answers, then…good luck with that.)

If you are like the rest of us, you are still growing & learning about relationships. Join us as we look at what the bible has to say about some very practical topics like:

<del>Conflict</del> <del>- January 24th & 31st</del>

<del>Forgiveness</del> <del> – February 7th</del>

Sex – February 14th
Does God have anything to say about the way we deal with Sex? Relationships are important: come as we discuss this very real topic from a practical and biblical standpoint.

Marriage – February 21st

Family & Parenting – February 28th

This is the series for you if you are: Single, Dating, Married, A Parent, Know other people. (Yeah, it’s pretty much designed for you.)

Last week, a 7.0 earthquake rocked the nation of Haiti. The prime minister has speculated that casualties could top more than 100,000 people. The national palace is a crumbled ruin and tens of thousands of people are homeless.

Pray for protection, miraculous healings, restoration and acceleration of the kingdom for Haiti. Let’s contend for a total turnaround from this quake into a shaking of a nation unto salvation.

Give. You can give to the relief effort, in addition to your normal tithe and offering, by checking “other” and noting Haiti on your tithe and offering envelope.

Lighthouse is part of a larger family of churches called Foursquare: we have missionaries scattered all over the world, including Haiti. We will give updates about what the Foursquare Church is doing to help relief efforts in Haiti over the next several weeks.

Last week, a prophetic word was shared with you in regard to this church body. One that we feel the Lord has been stirring in our hearts for some time and is bringing to fruition. As with all words of prophecy, we ask that you take time to judge the word for yourselves, and against the word of God.

We truly believe that God desires to birth a “new thing” here at Lighthouse. And when something new is being birthed, there are always labor pains that accompany it. Many of you have been feeling those for quite some time. You’ve felt the loss of loved ones in the body. Yet we believe that in order for the something new to be birthed, those labor pains must come and will continue until the new thing is brought forth and established here at Lighthouse.

We know that just as with a new child, they have their own set of DNA that gives them their own identity. In the same way, this new thing that God desires to birth will give us a new DNA as a church body. Our new DNA will be founded upon two things: (1) we will be a people who know and live the Word of God and (2) we will be a people who intentionally live the Spirit-filled life.

Isaiah 43:18-19 (esv) says

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.”

This does not mean that we forget our history as a church, but it places the focus and perspective forward, to the future, to the new thing that God is doing! We hope you are encouraged and will partner with us in prayer that God would bring forth that new thing and accomplish all He has purposed for Lighthouse!

~ Pastors Brian and Rebecca

Many months ago, while reading Jesus’ words in Luke 14, we felt God birth in us a vision for a Thanksgiving Banquet open to all. We thought to ourselves, “YES! We’ll do as Jesus said and invite the poor, serve the community, and have the banquet here. But how God, for we don’t have the means to do it?” Thankfully God doesn’t rely on what we have, but on what HE can do. Soon after that vision was birthed, everything for a beautiful and functional kitchen was unexpectedly donated to the church by an outside donor. You see, God provided all that we had need of in order to fulfill His vision.

Thanksgiving is a time for family, a time to remember the testimonies of God in our lives; a time to intentionally thank God, our family and friends for their role in shaping, sharpening and supporting us. As such, we want to take time as a family to thank God for what he has done, and to invite the community to share with us. November 15th is a date that has been set aside for such a time as this. We’ll be hosting our “Night of Thanks” dinner at Lighthouse at 6pm.

As you know, the holidays are a time that people are more open to the idea of church, and more specifically God. This is an opportunity for us to not only serve our community, but to share with them in Thanksgiving of our Great God; that we might compel them to come in, that God’s house may be filled as thanks go forth to Him who is worthy!

The vision God has given us for this event is large, but together we can do it; consider being a part of one of the many teams needed to facilitate this event. Details will be coming next week.

Last week we addressed the issue of “Does God Care” in regard to finances. All of us at times have been in the midst of financial struggle; many of us may be there even now. It’s important to understand that God Does Care and His inspired word, the Bible, has much to say about this subject.

First, we must place our hope in God alone. The wisest & richest of all men, King Solomon wrote “whoever trusts in his riches will fall” (Proverbs 11:28). He understood that earthly riches don’t bring happiness and can’t follow you to the grave. Furthermore, Jesus in Matthew 6: 24 says “you cannot serve both God and money.” It is clear that we must choose to put our hope in God who is faithful rather than money which is fleeting.

Second, God promises he will provide for our needs, though not necessarily what we think we need. Jesus in Matthew 6:31-33 says “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” There is a catch: Jesus instructs us to seek after those things that please Him, then he will take care of our needs.

Third, we must be wise with our money. Proverbs 27 instructs us to look ahead to the future by taking care of what we have, and saving for a rainy day. We must be wise! There is a balance between faith and foresight; between looking TO God and looking AFTER what He’s already given us.

Lastly, understand that the goal of our lives is not to become rich with earthly goods; but with heavenly riches. God never promises His people prosperity in the Bible, but instead He promises that when we seek Him and seek after those things which please Him, then He will do what He promised and meet our needs.

Are you in need this morning? Ask God for your needs as you seek His will in your life. He cares for you and wants to take care of you!

Here are some ways you can partner in prayer and provision for our local missions and world-wide missionaries. We strongly believe in each of these and encourage you to pray, give or go in support of these local and world-wide missions!

Refuge Food Pantry: Local Mission: Santa Cruz County
Bring your grocery bags and/or non-perishable food items next Sunday as we prepare for our October Food Pantry. Also, we are looking for people to serve in this ministry. If interested, talk with Pastor Rebecca.

Pueyes Family: Pichilemu Chile
Pray for the Pueyes’ as they are still in need of finances for a new office and the ability to fix their Mac so they can continue work. Pray also for their ministry and family.

Smith Family: Russia
Pray that the Lord’s glory will fall in Russia, that the church will be free despite constant harassment and intimidation, and that the people will be free to live the lives God intended for them from the beginning! God wants them to be FREE in Jesus!

Anderson Family: Pichilemu Chile
Pray for the Anderson’s as they continue the work to cover the pool, work on the Christian School project, and prepare for their many missionary training schools: School of Worship, School of Biblical Studies, School of English, Biblical Counseling School, School of Grace, DTS, and Sports DTS!

Abegg Family: Cuba
The Abegg’s anticipate always being focused on fulfilling the great commission and foreign missions in particular, yet for over a year now they’ve sensed the Lord stirring their hearts toward a new path: a God given burden for the local church on both the sending and receiving ends of missions and a continued desire to see the fulfillment of the great commission.

Thank you for your continued support of our local missions as well as the missionaries serving around the world.

Have you ever felt trapped by impossible circumstances? Countless times many of us have been crushed under the burden of impossibility. You may feel that way now, as though your circumstances are greater than anything you can possibly bear. The good news is this: Impossible Situations are made Possible with God!

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” – Luke 1:37 (ESV)

Take a look at the circumstances surrounding this verse: Mary was a virgin, pledged to be married to Joseph. The angel Gabriel appeared to her and declared that she would conceive, and bear a son to be named Jesus, and he would be the Savior of the world. She asked the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” He explained that the Holy Spirit would come upon her, and the power of God overshadow her, and she would conceive the child who would be called “holy-the Son of God.” Mary’s response was simple yet profound: “let it be to me according to your word.” In other words, I believe it! Let it be so! Let it come to pass!

Mary had faith in God’s miracle working abilities. She believed the words that were spoken to her despite the impossible circumstances she faced. Imagine you are Mary, and you were visited by an angel of God with this message “though you’re a virgin, the Holy Spirit will come upon you to conceive and you will bear a son who is the Savior.” That’s physically impossible – a virgin cannot conceive let alone bear a son, the Son of God. Yet, with God it was possible. Mary took God at His word and for that she was called blessed of the Lord.

We all face seemingly impossible circumstances. We have in our past, we do in our present and we surely will in our future. We must seek what the Lord has to say about our circumstances. We must believe upon His words concerning our circumstances, far more than rely on what our physical eyes can see. For we serve a God who will do what He says. God has no boundaries, He is not hindered by our flesh, nor bound by the laws of this world. With God, ALL things are possible! Oh that we would have the response of Mary – “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

~ Pastors Brian and Rebecca

We love family. There is something remarkable about a healthy family relationship: the unmistakable love and acceptance that comes from being part of something bigger than yourself, knowing that you are always welcomed, always loved, always accepted. That’s what real family looks like. There is a reason God used this example when explaining our relationship with one-another as the Family of God. In-fact God chose us and knew us before the creation of the world, and Ephesians 1:5, says “He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ” We are certainly part of the Family of God.

We are God’s children. 1 John 3:1 speaks of God’s incredible love for us and says, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” As Christ-followers, each of us are part of God’s family; we each play a role and a function; each of us form the collective whole of the His church.

We are part of something bigger than ourselves: We believe in the universal, invisible church: that is, the collection of millions of Christ followers across this entire world. In addition to being members of God’s global church, we are also part of a family of churches called Foursquare. This worldwide movement includes over 10 million members, over 55,000 churches and more than 67,000 ministers. It is a privilege to be a part of such a vibrant and healthy family: we work together with our sister churches to fulfill the great commission of Jesus: making disciples of all nations.

We have a passion to introduce Jesus Christ—the Savior, the Healer, the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit, and the Soon-Coming King—to every person, in every nation, in every culture. Our church family spans the globe, working together to spread the Good News of Jesus: from missionaries in all corners of the Earth, to local churches partnered with us to “be the Light of the world” right here in Santa Cruz County.

These past two weeks as we have talked about the words that we say, we also touched on the sensitive subject of the words that we hear. We all know the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Unfortunately, this is simply not true. Words can and do hurt a great deal. Words from others can shape the thoughts we have about ourselves. They can shape the thoughts we have about our abilities, and our worth. Words can shape our very identity.

That’s why we must identify ourselves with the words that God speaks about us. And don’t you know that those words are life-giving! Take a look at these Life-Giving words!

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” – 1 Peter 1:3-5

Think of a witness protection program. Just as the witness must take on a completely new identity: so must we when we come into the family of God. You see, that witness must take on a new job, a new look, a new location, a new history, and a new name. They must sever all ties to their former identity and walk forward in their new identity. So also, we are given a new identity when we come into the family of God. We’re given a new start in the eyes of God. He now sees us as sons and daughters, cleansed by the blood of Jesus. He’s given us a new heart with new desires. He says we no longer belong to the kingdom of this world, but we belong to the kingdom of heaven. Moreover, the Bible tells us that He’s given us a new name. Where we were once identified as sinners, we are now considered to have the righteousness of Christ (Phil 3:9).

You see, God has given each of us a new identity, and with that a new purpose. We no longer need to associate our identity with those former words spoken over us, but can base our identity of that of the solid rock, Christ Jesus our Lord! Walk forward in your new identity!

Here are some ways you can partner in prayer and provision for our local missions and world-wide missionaries. We strongly believe in each of these and encourage you to pray, give or go in support of these local and world-wide missions!

Refuge Food Pantry: Local Mission: Santa Cruz County
If you would like to donate grocery bags and/or non-perishable food items, please bring them next Sunday as we prepare for our September Food Pantry.

Pueyes Family: Pichilemu Chile
Pray for the Pueyes’ as they need to move next week and are in need of finances for a new office and the ability to fix their Mac so they can continue work. Pray also for their ministry and family.

Abegg Family: Cuba
The Abegg’s anticipate always being focused on fulfilling the great commission and foreign missions in particular, yet for over a year now they’ve sensed the Lord stirring their hearts toward a new path: a God given burden for the local church on both the sending and receiving ends of mission and a continued desire to see the fulfillment of the great commission.

Smith Family: Russia
Pray that the Lord’s glory will fall in Russia, that the church will be free despite constant harassment and intimidation, and that the people will be free to live the lives God intended for them from the beginning! God wants them to be FREE in Jesus!

Thank you for your continued support of our local missions as well as the missionaries serving around the world.

We live in uncertain times, and many of us see the victory of the enemy in the world around us. We are inundated by media that is fascinated with bringing depressing and fear-inducing news. I’m glad we serve a God who doesn’t listen to those reports. Jesus said of us “They are not of the world, jut as I am not of the world” (John 17:16). You see, now that we have been restored to right relationship with God through Jesus, we are no longer bound by the captivity of this world. We serve a God who is victorious, for Jesus already purchased victory for us, and all who believe, on the cross.

This doesn’t mean that as Christians our lives will be picture perfect, but that we serve a God who will walk us through our situations to the victory: one that will provide for all our needs.

For many, these past months have been difficult. With the state of the economy, the loss of friendships, and the constant of change around us: it’s difficult to understand what God is up to. Be encouraged by this: As Jesus had just foretold of His death and resurrection, Judas’ betrayal and Peter’s denial; His very next words to His disciples were:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me…Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:1, 27).

You see, Jesus understood the uncertainty, hurt and frustration that His disciples must have been feeling. And immediately He spoke those words of comfort. ‘Don’t worry’, He said, ‘Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Don’t be afraid of what may come. Simply believe in God and in me [Jesus]’. Jesus spoke these words knowing the good news of salvation that would come through Him and the victory over death, hell and the grave that would emerge from his sacrifice on the cross.

The good news is that Jesus simply asks for our belief in Him. This means acknowledging Him as Lord and Savior, acknowledging His victory over this world, and acknowledging His purpose in placing us where we are in time and location. Though things may change, though situations might look differently, though things may appear difficult; Let not your hearts be troubled, but believe that God has a plan and a purpose! Trust God: He is Faithful.

Today, we conclude the 20-week series entitled: Organic Jesus. This series has taken us verse by verse through the book of 1 John. As we have explored the true, authentic and real Jesus of the Bible our hope is that you have both gleaned from God’s Word and grown in knowledge and faith in the organic Jesus of the Bible. Because, It’s all about Jesus!

We’ve highlighted some key themes from the series below:

Jesus is God. 1 John 1:1 tells us that Jesus existed from the beginning, He was Fully God and Fully Man.

Jesus saves. We know that we are saved not by cold dead religion, but only by our faith in Jesus. 1John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness..” Confess: literally meaning to speak the same as God about something. 1 John 4:15 says “Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” Praise God! When we confess Jesus as the very Son of God, we immediately become part of God’s family!

Jesus was sinless. 1John 1:5 says that Jesus lived a sinless life on this earth, and as a result was the perfect atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 3:5 says “You know that he (Jesus) appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.”

Jesus is our advocate. 1John 2:1-5 tells us that Jesus is our advocate before the father. It says, – “We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” Not only did Jesus pay the price for our sins, but he testifies before Father God that we are His. Even more, this opportunity is available to all who would believe.

Jesus came to show us REAL love: Jesus taught us what real love is all about and 1John 4:19 says, “We love because he first loved us.” John takes it a step further in 1 John 3:18 and says, “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” Let us be a people that is known by our love for God and our love for one another. Let us be a people whose actions speak louder than our words, and reflect the Love of Jesus to a world in need. After all, our mission is to Love God and Love People!

You can listen to the entire series from our website here, or subscribe to our podcast (requires iTunes).

Aren’t you glad we are part of God’s family? The bible says that each of us have been adopted into His family, and each one (weak or strong) are members of His body. In-fact, Romans 12:4-5 states “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

As you can see from this verse, we are all interconnected in the body. As such, we need to act like a body. You may ask, how do we do this? Unity is first and foremost. A body works together in order to function effectively. Second, as a body we must be aware of our other members, watching out for and caring for them. Each of us is inextricably connected to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ: we do this thing together!

Proverbs 27:6 says “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy.” Sometimes we may come across issues that face other members of our body. We are not called to turn our heads as if it weren’t happening, nor are we called to judge. These actions are destructive to those in trouble. Instead, we are called to first of all pray for them: to see God’s potential in them, and seek God’s will for them.

Proverbs 27:17 says “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” Think about the knives in your kitchen. Over time, and with use, they become dull and no longer able to cut as easily as before. In order to sharpen them, you scrape the knife against a knife sharpener made of similar hard metal. This is the same idea expressed in this verse. We, as the body of Christ, are called to sharpen one another. We are called to mutual accountability and edification. We are called to watch out for one another and to cover one another in prayer.

This week call your fellow brother or sister in Christ during the week with an encouraging word, and pray for your spiritual family.

Recently I was asked the question “does God really hear my prayers? And if he does, does he really care about my prayers?” It caught me off guard, but as I thought about the young girl’s question, I realized that she was one of many who truly wondered how God can both care about her life and hear her prayers when there is so much going on in the world around her, with so much injustice and so much sorrow. She reasoned with me that God must simply be too busy to listen to her problems and therefore she was hesitant to present her requests to the Lord.

You see, this young girl had real life circumstances that she wanted to take to the Lord in prayer, yet she didn’t understand that God would actually hear her and answer her requests. She doubted his ability to hear her and thus doubted her value in God’s eyes. I had the pleasure of talking to her about our great God who loves her, created her, cares deeply for her and hears her when she calls. I shared with her the fact that God is omnipresent, meaning He is everywhere at the same time. And since God is everywhere, He is able to hear her. Moreover, when she confessed Jesus as her Lord and Savior, God gave her the Holy Spirit to dwell inside of her. God gives us His Spirit so that we are never alone: we always have access to our God the Father.

Prayer is a subject we, Christians, often don’t talk about. Many of us acknowledge the need for it, however when we are faced with difficult circumstances we forget to pray or like this young girl, think that God won’t hear, or worse yet won’t answer. I encourage you, pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This means continually talking to God throughout the day: praising God for who He is, thanking God for what He’s done, presenting your requests to God for a present or future need. God hears you when you call!

~ Pastor Rebecca

As a nation, we just celebrated the 4th of July holiday, also known as Independence Day. This is a day in which we celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring our freedom as a nation from the Kingdom of Great Britain. We honor those Americans who paid the price with their blood, sweat and tears to purchase our freedom in the Revolutionary War, as well as those who have fought to secure it in the years since.

Even as we prize our freedom as Americans, we are moved to consider a greater freedom – our freedom in Christ. Galatians 5:1 tells us “For freedom Christ has set us free.” He did this with His blood, sweat and tears. He did this because of His great love for us. He did this voluntarily. Christ, the very Son of God, came down in flesh to endure the punishment that we deserve, in order to purchase our freedom from death and sin. In exchange we receive life in Christ and reconciliation to Father God!

The very fact that we commemorate a day to celebrate our freedom in America, honoring those who have purchased our freedom, is wonderful. As John Adams spoke of Independence Day: “It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade…”

How much more should we choose to celebrate our freedom in Christ? Christ has set us free from the spiritual bondage of sin. Christ has set us free from the punishment we deserve, for Romans 3:23 tells us “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” God’s love for us is absolutely amazing! He purchased our freedom to have eternal life with Him. That’s something to celebrate!

This season, let’s be continually in thanks for the freedoms we have been given, celebrating those freedoms and honoring those who have purchased our freedoms: National freedom in these beautiful United States, and Spiritual Freedom in Christ.

~ Pastors Brian and Rebecca

Join us on Thursday, May 7th from 6pm-7pm for the National Day of Prayer. We’ll be meeting in the family room of Lighthouse to pray for our nation, our county, our city and our church. The Bible instructs us to seek God through prayer when we’re in need. Even more amazing, the Bible says that He hears our prayers and will fulfill our requests as we align our will with His.

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14 (ESV)

Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” – Matthew 9:37-38 (ESV)

We are at a critical time in the history of our nation. As the church, we need to gather together and contend for the lost, pray to the Lord of the harvest for more workers, and prepare for what God will do in the months to come.

We had our first quarter Life Group Celebration this past Wednesday night. It was such a blessing to hear so many share their testimonies of God’s goodness to speak through His living Word during this past season of Life Groups.

As many of you know, we have a specific format we take in Life Groups. It’s simply SOAP.

Scripture: prayerfully choose one verse to write in your journal.

Observation: Take a few moments to write an observation about that verse itself and within its context.

Application: Write down how you will apply this scripture to your life, in light of your observations.

Prayer: Write a prayer asking the Lord to help you apply this scripture to your life.

Pastor Rebecca Fox

Over this first quarter of 2009, I have seen specific themes in my SOAP’s as I’ve looked through the various titles I’ve given them. Two of the most common titles are Parameters for Promise and Power of a Testimony. But I found it very interesting to see the other themes God has been showing me when I input all of my titles for the quarter into a website that creates Word Clouds: wordle.net

Here is the word cloud of what God has been showing me in His inspired Word, the Bible, over this first quarter. You can click on it to open the link.

Pastor Brian Fox

Here’s what Pastor Brian has been hearing over this past quarter of Life Groups.
